I’ve an licensing requirement related enquiry before purchasing Backup Exec 2012 licenses. Currently, we have a client with 4 servers with the following roles below. I'm confused on the licenses required to purchase to fulfill the agent licensing requirement by Symantec. Kindly help.

Server 1 – Active Directory

Server 2 – Active Directory, SQL & Backup Exec Media Server

Server 3 – SQL

Server 4 – Hyper-V

As what I can think of is, I need 2 x Agent for App & DB (for 1 & 2 & 3), 1 x Hyper-V Agent (for 4). Since Server 2 is BEMS, is BE server license is sufficient?

I am thinking to implement snapsure option to resolve this issue , we already have scheduled snapshot enabled in celerra filer, my question is will snapsure option create a seperate snapshot or it will utilize existing snapshots?

I'm having an issue with backing up regional servers to our head office.

We have a head office and 5 regional offices connected via WAN.

We are using NBU 7.1.0.4 and 5020 applianes (1.4.2) and LTO4 tape drives.

I have tested a backup from a regional server to the head office media server to tape and it runs fine ( if a little slow ) and it completes successfully.

When I run the same backup to the 5020 appliance the backup fails with the error:

(Note I have anonymised server and appliance names).

I have the advised firewall ports open and have even opened all TCP ports as a test but the backup still fails.

Local backups to the appliance from other servers in head office to the appliance all run with no issues.

Just hoping someone may have encountered this before, my COMMS guy is away this week so have to wait logging a call for a Webex with Symantec until he is back.

The Symantec Backup Exec NDMP Option uses the Network Data Management
Protocol (NDMP) to back up and restore Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices.

So i have a questions:

1. What kind of data does it realy backing up, files and folders ?
2. I have VMs that is running on NetApp, is it possible to back them up over NDMP to local attached tape library?

bet its going to be a detailed conversation. Exchange GRT restore is failing with the basic error and i have tried all the relevent technotes that are out there but no luck. all the permissions are there, mailbox is active can send and receive email. account that is using to backup the GRT level backup is okay as backups are running fine. but i can't seem to restore a mailbox. any suggestions would highly be appreicated as always.. call logged with symantec and as usual they have asked ton of logs..

Some question for data encryption over client-side deduplication:

1. how the encryption key is created, and where is created?

2. where is the key kept (on the client, media server or master server) and how is the key being managed when encrypted backup gets duplicated to another media server

3. where does the decryption occur when restoring data, specially restoring to a different client host which is not the host that was backed up?

I have a situation whereby a Physical Windows 2003 R2 Standard SP2 server will backup fine with a Differential Incremental schedule but fails consistently with a FULL schedule - status 87.

It has previously backed up OK on a FULL schedule to the 5230 several times, but all of a sudden fails every time a FULL backup is attempted.  The backup appears to work successfully and backs up around 330GB of the 624GB total before failing.  Log below:

The above job was run during a quiet time on the backup environment with only two other jobs running from different clients.

I have reviewed a number of forum posts around this but am confused as to where to look.  The above is stating memory allocation issues - on the client or on the media server (5230 in this case) ?  I have an almost identical client to this backing up successfully every time (FULL or DIFF), whwereas this one fails a FULL every time now (DIFF OK).

As can be seen I am using ACCELERATOR and Client Side DeDup (OpenStorage Client Direct) here, and all was well with great performance until now.

Is this an issue with previous backup images catalogued on the appliance ?  I have seen similar before where the same client has had upper and lower case backup images and a logiical link had to be created on the appliance which resolved the issue.  Could this be someway related ?

I am working on tpautoconf -t one of Linux server but it shows following error :

tpautoconf -t
/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/bpclntcmd: error while loading shared libraries: libnbclientST.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I am not sure what kind of error is there is communication between client/Media/Master server look good.

I suspect that is there any patch updation or Library Licences Keys need to be update ?

Currently it is running Netbackup 7.1

There are 5 drives in the tape library and every 1-2 days will 1 or 2 LTO5 drives went missing.   The issue resolved after we reboot the netbackup media / master server and /or tape library?

Hi,

I am using Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 Granular Restore to recover file. When I select file and click Recover I get the error:

"Unable to read the recovery point image from disk. (i) Check for network issues; (ii) Reload the recovery point".

Recovery points are on the same server where BESR 2010 is installed and there are no issues with network.

Also, if I use Recovery Point Browser to recover the same file, it works fine.

My client has purchased 4 x Netbackup 5220 Appliances, they intend on using AIR replication, backup accelerator amongst other features.  I'm having some difficulties establishing what are the licensing requirements for these devcies.

The client has bought a lot of Netbackup licensing over the years which has never been used, further to this the client has 8 Netbackup 5000 appliances sitting in DC and have never been used. These appliances have been licensed for 16TB each front end. I intend on migrating the current Netbackup 7.5.0.5 Infrastructure to the new 5220's

What I would like to achive on the clients behalf is establish the baseline licensing required and then establish what I can transfer across to the 5220's and what if I need to purchase any additional licensing requirements.

I would appricate any swift response's as I have chased Symantec for some time and I am not getting any answers.

In the last weeks we are facing problems with one of our Media Servers (Windows 2003) - sometimes the disk gets full. This happens since the disk size was reduced.

Now we investigated these problems and we found that duplication jobs are not done after the backup jobs. In the past we thougt that after every backup job a duplication job starts, because we have configured the staging schedule with the following settings:

- type calendar
- Start Window each day from 0:00:00 to 00:00:00
- Calendar schedule: Reccuring week days, select all

But it seems that duplication jobs only start each day at 00:01:00 and after that, no more duplication jobs are starting this day. So backups that complete after 00:01:00 are duplicated not before the next night 00:01:00.

Is this correct and working as intended? Perhaps we have not seen this problem because we had a significant higher disk size in the past (12TB to 3TB), so there was enough room for backups until next duplication job.

As a workaround, we set the schedule to "frequency, 1 hour"  and it seems to run fine. Manual relocation is working also, but we dont want to do manual tasks.

Is there a way to configure staging to duplicate the images directly after the backup job?

Also, i know about HWM and LWM, but this settings are not relevant for duplication but for cleaning the already duplicated images.
Is my knowledge on this correct?

ich habe zwei Server auf denen täglich ein Vollbackup läuft. Einmal Exchange, (wird über den Remoteagent gesichert) und einmal ein Mailarchivierungsprogramm, welches auf dem Server selbst läuft, auf dem auch die Backupexec Software installiert ist.

Die Backups werden auf dem Server lokal auf die Platten ausgeführt und laufen auch einwandfrei.

Zusätzlich sollen diese beiden Backups nach dem Abschluss, über einen zeitgesteuerten Kopienjob, auf ein externe USB-HD gesichert werden.

Jetzt habe ich das Problem das aber nicht nur die Dateien des letzten Backups kopiert werden, sondern zusätzlich immer die Dateien der letzten Tage zuvor. Nach welcher Gesetzmäßigkeit die Anzahl der Tage ausggewählt werden die zusätzlich kopiert werden, kann ich nicht erkennen. Eigentlich sollen eben nur die Dateien des zuletzt ausgeführten Vollbackups kopiert werden.

Die Einstellungen in den Kopienjobs für die Quelle stand zuerst auf "Ausgewählte Backups", dort dann eben das enstprechende Vollbackup ausgewählt.

Ergebnis: Beschriebenes Problem tritt auf.

Einstellungen bei Quelle stehen jetzt auf "Neuestes vollständiges Backup".

Ergebnis: Der Kopienjob des Vollbackups für den Exchange Server kopiert auch wirklich nur die Dateien des zuletzt gelaufenen Backups, der andere Kopienjob sichert nach wie vor zusätzlich die Dateien der Backups der vorangegangenen Tage.

Hat jemand einen Tipp für mich was ich hier falsch eingestellt habe?

I have two 3600 R2's , have promoted one to CAS w/o problem, but trying to make the other a MBES  (steps as outlined in Admin Guide) gives an error after entering the CAS Server: the SQL instance complains about invalid credentials for the SQL DB. I made sure the service account is the same on both appliances. Any other idea?

I need some help to fix my netbackup media server STU not reclaiming space. 

Netbackup Setup:

OS: Microsoft Windows 2008 R2

Netbackup Version : 7.1.0.4

Netbackup Master : 1 

Netbackup Media Server (Tape / Puredisk) : 6 

We are having problem with 1 of our puredisk media server.

Based on Disk Pool Status, Storage Pool is 99.89% Full.

However upon checking the Disk Reports > Images on Disk. Selecting concerned Storage STU to list all images, it shows no result or any images stored in it.

Hope anyone can help me to fix our issue. We need the Storage Unit to be avaiable again for backup.

During a Full Exchange 2010 GRT backup on the passive node in a DAG, the Microsoft Exchange Replica Writer went into a "Retryable Error" state causing the status 130. We will address this issue with MS to fix that problem.

What I could use assistance with from the Symantec forum is the following:

1. What NBU log files on the passive node do I need to setup in order to capture why the backup is failing? right now I have bpfis created on the Exchange 2010 passive client (where the passive database is located and where the backup is performed)

2. Why would our nightly Full Non-GRT still complete successfully without any errors as opposed to the GRT?

Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Enterprise x64
